PROFILE
"Slow Death Bucknor" is what Steve Bocknor is famously called all around the cricketing world. The characteristic nod of the head accompanied by the slow raise of the finger is what defines one of the most esteemed members of the ICC Elite umpire panel.
He holds the distinction of officiating in three World Cup finals. He became the first umpire to stand in over 100 Tests.
Besides cricket, Bucknor has also officiated a football World Cup qualifier.
In recent times, he has not been at the top of his form and has had to justify decisions that have left many bewildered. He shocked the media world by accusing television channels of doctoring with the coverage of matches to make the umpires look bad.
Steve has earned the respect of cricketers from far and wide for his just and well thought out decisions. Due to retire in 2011, Bucknor will undoubtedly have many more laurels to his name when he finally hangs his boots.
Bucknor has been India’s Darrell Hair denying the Men in Blue many good appeals and myriad venues. When India were on the verge of a historic series win in Australia in 2003-04, Bucknor refused a series of close LBW appeals by India leading to a draw. Sourav Ganguly severly criticized him in his report to the ICC. His detractors also accuse him of being unfair to Sachin on more than one occasion.
