Deccan Chargers

O

Here is one team which does not have many big names to support itself; which does not have beautiful faces like Preity Zinta, Shilpa Shetty or Shah Rukh Khan to glamorise it; nor does it have any ‘icon player’ to symbolise itself with.

Led by the Deccan Chronicle group, the Deccan Chargers have always maintained a low profile when it comes to off-the-field activities, unlike other teams which have always been loud enough to make their presence felt much before the tournament started.

Here is one team, which believes in doing all the ‘talking’ on-the-field and the only thing that speaks for it is its rumbustious composition.

Led by the former Australian great, Adam Gilchrist, Deccan Chargers boasts of names like Andrew Symonds, VVS Laxman, Chamara Silva, Chaminda Vaas, Nuwan Zoysa, Herschelle Gibbs, Scott Styris, Dwayne Smith and Fidel Edwards.

Despite being the favourites last year, the outfit failed to make a mark in the inaugural season of the Indian Premier League under the captaincy of Laxman. A feeling of complete-yet-incomplete hovered over the squad.

Representing the city of ‘Minars’, Hyderabad, the side finished last in the IPL 2008, managing to win only two matches throughout the season; one against Mumbai Indians, and one against Chennai Super Kings.

However, this year, the owners and the officials have revamped the team; not only did they change their captain from Laxman to Gilchrist, but they also changed the colour of their jersey to a spectacular combination of midnight blue and silver.

Where on one hand it has the experience of Gilchrist, Laxman, Silva, Vaas and Gibbs; on the other, it also has the youth, energy and exuberance of RP Singh, Pragyan Ojha and Rohit Sharma (also the vice-captain of the team).

After having to drop all-rounder Shahid Afridi from the squad due to persistent issues between India and Pakistan after the 26/11 attack in Mumbai, the owners have made some new purchases this year, like Fidel Edwards, Dwayne Smith and Harmeet Singh.
