Profile of Mohender Amarnath

Mohender Amarnath, son of great Lala Amarnath, was a player known for making comeback after comeback into the Indian sides. In a career spanning more than two decades, Mohender faced the faster bowlers fearlessly in his playing days at a time when Indian batsmen used to surrender meekly in front of quality fast bowlers.

His ability to play real fast bowlers is testified by the fact that nine of his eleven Test centuries came outside India and on lively pitches.

But his best moment under the sun came in the final of 1983 World Cup against the mighty West Indies when his all round show helped India snatch the coveted trophy from the WIndies.

Born on September 24th, 1950 in Patiala, Amarnath was a fierce competitor, but a humble person off the field.

In his overall career, Mohender played 69 Tests scoring 4,378 runs at a batting average of 42.50, with 11 hundreds and 24 fifties, and also picked 32 wickets with his gentle medium pace.

He also played 85 ODIs scoring 1,924 runs at an average of 30.53. His highest score was 102 not out and also claimed 46 wickets. As a bowler he was known as a ‘partnership breaker’.

In his playing days he was a shrewd customer and his wisdom is well-reflected in his analysis as a cricket commentators and expert.
